Ethiopia is facing the prospect of a return to civil war following a recent military offensive by Tigrayan rebels into the neighboring states of Afar and Amhara. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing instability that has plagued the nation since the conclusion of the 2020-2022 conflict, which resulted in an estimated 600,000 deaths.

The situation has been further complicated by the formation of a new coalition consisting of seven armed groups from across the country, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The stated goal of this alliance is to challenge the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. While the coalition frames its actions as a necessary political and military response, the central government characterizes the movement as an illegal insurrection.

There is currently a direct contradiction regarding the origins of the renewed violence. Both the Ethiopian government and the TPLF-led coalition have issued statements accusing the other side of initiating the hostilities. Because independent verification remains difficult in the affected regions, it is currently impossible to determine which party launched the first strike. The international community has expressed concern that this new phase of fighting could mirror the scale and humanitarian toll of the previous two-year war, which devastated the Tigray region and strained Ethiopia's national infrastructure. As of now, both sides appear to be mobilizing further, signaling that a diplomatic resolution is not currently on the horizon.
