A report released by the investment fund Rebalance Earth warns that the UK's food security is increasingly threatened by climate-related water stress. According to the data, 81% of England’s fresh produce is cultivated in regions currently experiencing significant water scarcity. The study further breaks down the vulnerability of staple crops, noting that 77% of wheat, 75% of barley, and 74% of oilseed rape are grown in areas classified as having a moderate to very high risk of drought. Additionally, 70% of sugar beet production is concentrated in these at-risk zones.

The report emphasizes that the concentration of essential food production in these specific geographical areas creates a systemic risk for the UK food supply chain. As climate patterns shift and drought conditions become more frequent, the reliance on these water-stressed regions could lead to supply volatility and potential price increases for consumers. While the report focuses on the environmental and agricultural risks, it serves as a call for increased investment in water management infrastructure and more resilient farming practices to mitigate the impact of future climate events on the nation's food security.
