A team of researchers in China has announced the discovery of a tomb they believe belongs to Empress Dowager Huayang, a significant historical figure who served as the adoptive grandmother to Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China. The site is situated in an unusual location: directly adjacent to a major city runway in Shaanxi province.

According to Zhao Hanqing of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, the tomb’s location and structural characteristics point toward the Empress Dowager. Empress Dowager Huayang was a member of the powerful Chu state royal family and played a pivotal role in the political landscape of the Warring States period. Her influence helped stabilize the Qin state, ultimately facilitating the unification of China under the Qin dynasty in 221 BC.

While the identification is based on archaeological analysis of the site, the report notes that the proximity to modern infrastructure—specifically the airport—highlights the intersection of China’s rapid modern development and its deep historical preservation efforts. The researchers suggest that the tomb's scale and the artifacts recovered from the site align with the status of a high-ranking royal woman from that era. Further excavations and analysis are expected to confirm these findings as the team continues to document the site's contents and historical context.
