According to Anka Reuel, a PhD candidate at the Stanford Trustworthy AI Research group, there is currently no independent source available to corroborate the claims made by these firms. Critics argue that because these companies control the data pipeline, they only release information that aligns with their corporate narratives or business interests. This creates a significant blind spot for policymakers and the public, who rely on these reports to understand the societal impact of generative AI.

While AI companies maintain that they are providing helpful insights into user behavior, the academic community is calling for more rigorous, third-party audits. Without access to raw, anonymized usage data, researchers claim it is impossible to know how people are actually interacting with these systems or to identify potential risks that companies may be incentivized to downplay or ignore.
