A $568 million federal community grants program has become the subject of political controversy following reports that the vast majority of early funding has been directed toward Labor-held seats. According to an analysis by Guardian Australia, more than 90% of the funds distributed during the first five months of the program were awarded to projects within electorates represented by the Labor Party.

This distribution pattern has prompted significant concern regarding the transparency and fairness of the grant selection process. The scrutiny follows a report published by the Centre for Public Integrity, which highlighted specific allocations, including a $6 million grant designated for a golf club located within Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s electorate. The report suggests that the criteria used to select these projects may have disproportionately favored government-held areas, leading to calls for greater oversight.

In response to these findings, the program is now slated for a Senate inquiry. While the government maintains that the grants are intended to support community infrastructure, critics argue that the concentration of funds in specific political districts suggests a lack of impartiality.
