The Seneca Nation has issued a formal call for the reversal of a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which mandates the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The Nation’s leadership contends that the unilateral decision disregards the historical and cultural significance of the region to Indigenous peoples, who have inhabited the area for centuries.

At the center of the dispute is the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua. The Seneca Nation asserts that the executive order infringes upon the sovereignty and rights established by this agreement, which has governed the relationship between the United States and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy for over 225 years. According to the Seneca leadership, the renaming process was conducted without consultation, reflecting what they describe as a “blatant disrespect” for the original stewards of the land.

While the Seneca Nation has been vocal in its opposition, the Trump administration has not yet issued a formal response regarding the legal or historical implications of the name change. The conflict highlights a broader tension between federal executive actions and the treaty obligations owed to Native American nations. As of now, the Seneca Nation is calling for an immediate rescission of the order, framing the issue as both a legal violation of treaty law and a symbolic erasure of Indigenous history.
