Thousands of Moroccan citizens recently attempted to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, an event that authorities attribute to a wave of misinformation circulating on social media. According to reports, viral posts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok falsely suggested that the border was opening, leading to a mass mobilization of individuals toward the city of Fnideq via bus and train.

While the physical surge was unfolding, the event triggered a diplomatic and political response within the European Union. During an emergency meeting, EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner expressed disapproval of Spain’s domestic plan to regularize the status of undocumented migrants. Brunner stated that while there is no confirmed direct link between the specific Ceuta incident and Spain’s regularization policy, the policy itself sends a negative signal to the rest of Europe. This criticism highlights a persistent tension between Spanish national migration strategies and the broader EU approach to border management.
