A leadership transition in Uganda has descended into a public dispute following the refusal of the primary candidate to accept the throne. The individual selected by the succession committee, who currently plays as an amateur goalkeeper in south-east London, turned down the role, citing existing personal and professional responsibilities.

Following this rejection, the committee moved to appoint a replacement. However, this decision has been met with direct opposition from the late king’s immediate family. The family claims the committee’s process is illegitimate, citing a 2022 will that they argue should dictate the path of succession. According to the family, this document was disregarded by the committee during their selection process. The disagreement highlights a significant rift between the formal committee tasked with overseeing the transition and the relatives of the deceased monarch, leaving the future of the throne uncertain.
