Organizers confirmed the mistake after social media users pointed out that the architectural design etched onto the medal is not a Sydney landmark, but rather a stadium located in Munich, Germany.

The error was brought to light shortly after the marathon’s official Instagram account posted a preview of the medal design. In that post, organizers had encouraged runners to look closely at the medal, stating that participants would “find the story of the course in the details.” Instead of highlighting the local route, the design inadvertently showcased a major sports venue from the other side of the world.

In a statement, marathon officials described the inclusion of the Munich stadium as an “unfortunate error.” While the organization has admitted to the mistake, they have not yet clarified whether they intend to replace the medals before the event takes place in a week’s time. The incident has drawn attention to the production process for event memorabilia, as runners who spent months training for the race expressed surprise at the oversight regarding the design of their commemorative awards.
