The Syrian Permanent Committee for Pricing Petroleum Products and Mineral Resources has announced a sharp increase in the cost of fuel and cooking gas. According to the official announcement, the price of 95-octane gasoline has risen by 28.3 percent, moving from 152 Syrian pounds ($1.25) to 195 pounds ($1.60) per litre. Similarly, 90-octane gasoline saw a 25.9 percent increase, rising from $1.21 to $1.52 per litre. Diesel prices also experienced a notable climb, increasing from approximately $1.03 to $1.44 per litre.

The government attributed these price adjustments to external and internal economic pressures. Specifically, officials pointed to the rising costs of global energy and shipping, as well as a decrease in domestic refining capacity, as the primary drivers behind the decision. These price hikes are described as temporary measures intended to manage the country's ongoing energy supply challenges. While the government frames these changes as a necessary response to market conditions, the move is expected to place additional financial strain on Syrian households already grappling with a long-standing economic crisis and high inflation rates.
