Thousands of citizens gathered in Kosovo’s capital to express support for former President Hashim Thaçi and three other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The demonstration took place just days before a special tribunal in the Netherlands is set to deliver verdicts in their ongoing war crimes trial. The defendants are accused of various crimes, including murder, torture, and illegal detention, allegedly committed during the 1998-1999 conflict with Serbia.

Supporters at the rally characterized the defendants as heroes who fought for Kosovo's independence, viewing the international court’s proceedings as an unfair attempt to rewrite the history of the conflict. The KLA is widely regarded by many Kosovars as a liberation force that fought against the oppressive regime of Slobodan Milošević. Conversely, the international court, known as the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, was established to investigate allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by KLA members during and after the war.

The trial has been a polarizing issue in the region. While international observers and human rights groups emphasize the importance of accountability for victims of the conflict, many in Kosovo argue that the court disproportionately targets ethnic Albanians while ignoring crimes committed by Serbian forces. The upcoming verdicts are expected to be a significant moment for the country, potentially impacting both domestic political stability and Kosovo’s ongoing efforts to normalize relations with Serbia.
