In a series of social media posts released late Friday, former President Donald Trump called on the Smithsonian Institution to significantly expand its tribute to George Washington. Trump’s proposal includes the installation of a 30-foot-tall statue of the first president on the grounds of the National Museum of American History (NMAH) in Washington, D.C.

As part of this request, Trump suggested that the museum remove the 'Infinity' sculpture, a stainless steel work by artist José de Rivera that has been a fixture outside the museum since 1967. In addition to the statue, Trump advocated for the creation of a dedicated exhibit within the museum to honor Washington’s legacy and contributions to the founding of the United States.

The Smithsonian Institution, which operates as a trust instrumentality of the U.S. government, has not yet issued a formal response to the former president’s public request. The institution maintains its own curatorial standards and processes for the acquisition of art and the development of exhibits, which are typically managed by museum leadership and boards of regents rather than by political directives. While the request has generated public discussion, there is currently no indication that the Smithsonian plans to alter its current exhibits or grounds to accommodate the proposal.
