Turkey, which maintains the second-largest military force within NATO, has announced a significant shift in its defense strategy. Vice-President Cevdet Yilmaz confirmed that the nation plans to more than triple its defense spending between 2027 and 2029, citing the need to address regional instability and expand the country's security influence across Europe and the Middle East.

A central component of this policy is a move toward self-reliance. Rather than increasing procurement from Western allies, the Turkish government intends to prioritize the growth of its domestic defense industry. By funneling the 229 percent budget increase into local manufacturing, Ankara aims to reduce its dependence on external military suppliers. This announcement comes amid ongoing regional conflicts that have prompted Turkey to reassess its security footprint and military capabilities.
