The casualties occurred while teams were attempting to build multi-tiered human pyramids, a central tradition of the festival where participants climb on each other's shoulders to break a pot of curd suspended high above the ground.

According to reports, the injured were distributed between Mumbai, which recorded 168 cases, and the neighboring city of Thane, which recorded 44 cases. The fatalities included a seven-year-old child, highlighting the risks associated with the high-altitude stunts performed during the event. While the festival is a major cultural and religious celebration, the physical toll on participants has become a recurring point of concern for local authorities and medical services. Emergency responders were deployed to manage the high volume of injuries, which typically range from fractures and sprains to more severe trauma resulting from falls during the pyramid formation. The event remains a significant logistical challenge for city officials, who must balance the cultural importance of the tradition with the safety of the thousands of participants involved each year.
