Two workers at Frankfurt Airport have died from malaria, according to reports from city health authorities and the airport operator, Fraport. The deaths occurred in July and August, though the link to malaria was only confirmed posthumously in the first case. In total, six employees at the facility were infected with the disease. Health officials believe the workers were bitten by mosquitoes that arrived in Germany on planes traveling from regions where malaria is common.

There is a discrepancy between reports regarding the current status of the other infected workers. Al Jazeera reports that four employees are currently being treated in the hospital. In contrast, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) notes that six workers were infected in total, but does not specify the current medical status of all individuals beyond the two fatalities.

In response to the incidents, airport authorities have deployed mosquito traps to monitor and mitigate the presence of insects at the Frankfurt hub. While malaria is not endemic to Germany, the arrival of infected mosquitoes via international air travel is a known, albeit rare, public health risk. Health authorities in Frankfurt are continuing to monitor the situation to prevent further transmission.
