This creates a unique situation where the coins are technically valid for use in everyday transactions, despite being sold at a premium above their face value. The U.S. Mint has clarified that while these coins feature 'circulating finishes,' they have not been placed into general circulation through standard banking channels.

Axios notes that while using the coins as currency is legally permissible, doing so may prove 'tricky' in practice. Because the coins are sold at a markup to collectors, spending them at face value would result in a significant financial loss for the owner. Furthermore, because they are not commonly found in circulation, retail employees or automated machines may not immediately recognize them as valid currency, potentially leading to confusion at the point of sale.
