A new report from the National Audit Office (NAO) has highlighted significant vulnerabilities in the United Kingdom’s food supply chain. The watchdog concluded that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has not taken adequate steps to prepare the nation for potential shocks, such as extreme weather events linked to climate change, large-scale cyber-attacks, or outbreaks of disease.

According to the NAO, these types of disruptions are becoming more frequent and severe, necessitating a more proactive approach to national food security. The report suggests that current government strategies lack the necessary resilience to ensure a consistent flow of food during a crisis. To address these gaps, the NAO recommends that Defra improve its collaboration with businesses, local communities, and households. The goal is to create a more robust system that can withstand sudden supply chain failures. While the report acknowledges the complexity of global food markets, it emphasizes that the government’s current oversight is insufficient to guarantee long-term stability in the face of modern, interconnected threats.
