The United Kingdom has announced new restrictions on trade involving Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank. The move is framed by the government as a step toward aligning trade policy with international legal standards regarding the status of these territories.

Reaction to the policy has been divided. Oxfam, a prominent humanitarian organization, has publicly welcomed the decision. Jean McLean, the group's Chief Influencing Officer, described the ban as a "significant and welcome step" toward upholding international law and fulfilling obligations stemming from recent International Court of Justice advisory opinions. However, Oxfam also urged the UK government to expand the scope of these restrictions, implying that the current measures do not go far enough to address the broader situation.

Conversely, Omar Barghouti, a co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, has dismissed the UK’s actions as "performative." Barghouti argued that the policy is ineffective because it targets specific settlement trade while the UK maintains broader economic and political ties with Israel. He characterized the UK’s approach as an attempt to address a specific "crime" while remaining complicit in what he described as a wider pattern of behavior. While Oxfam focuses on the potential of the trade ban to serve as a legal instrument for Palestinian rights, Barghouti’s critique centers on the perceived hypocrisy of the government’s limited intervention.
