For decades, many global maps have relied on the Mercator projection, a 16th-century navigational tool that significantly distorts the size of landmasses near the poles while shrinking those near the equator. This distortion has historically made Africa appear much smaller on global maps than its actual land area suggests.

By moving toward projections that prioritize area accuracy, the UN intends to provide a more realistic visual representation of the continent’s size relative to other global regions. Supporters of the initiative argue that the change is a necessary step in correcting colonial-era biases in geography and education.
