The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced a significant escalation in the number of Sudanese refugees crossing the border into eastern Chad. According to the agency, the current rate of displacement has reached approximately 400 people per day, a figure that represents a twenty-fold increase compared to previous daily averages. In total, more than 55,000 individuals have sought safety in Chad since the onset of the current crisis.

This surge in arrivals has placed immense pressure on existing resources in the region. The UNHCR has issued an urgent appeal for additional international funding to provide essential services, including food, water, and emergency shelter, for those who have crossed the border. The situation remains fluid, with aid organizations struggling to scale up operations to meet the needs of the rapidly growing refugee population. While the UN has highlighted the humanitarian necessity of the situation, the long-term capacity of Chad to host such a large number of displaced persons remains a primary concern for international observers.
