During the 2024 Democratic presidential primaries, a grassroots effort known as the 'uncommitted' movement gained significant momentum, drawing more than 700,000 votes from participants seeking to pressure the U.S. government into calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Co-founder Abbas Alawieh reports that while the movement successfully demonstrated a large base of support, it faced repeated setbacks when engaging with the Democratic Party establishment.

Specifically, the movement sought two major concessions: the inclusion of an arms embargo on Israel within the Democratic platform and a speaking slot for a Palestinian American at the Democratic National Convention. Both requests were denied by party leadership. According to Alawieh, these rejections served as a turning point for the movement, forcing organizers to reconsider how to exert political influence. Rather than focusing solely on national presidential politics, the movement is now pivoting toward local elections as a primary vehicle for change. This shift reflects a broader frustration among activists who feel their policy priorities were sidelined by party officials despite the significant number of primary votes cast in protest.
