The United States is expanding the role of its Coast Guard in the West Pacific as a strategic counterweight to China’s growing influence in the region. This shift comes as the U.S. Navy faces significant operational strain due to prolonged commitments in the Middle East. By utilizing the Coast Guard, the U.S. aims to maintain a persistent maritime presence without overextending its primary naval fleet.

A key component of this mission involves deepening cooperation with the Taiwanese coastguard. While proponents view this as a necessary step to ensure maritime security and regional stability, analysts suggest it carries significant geopolitical risks.
