The vulnerability, identified in July, centers on the way the messaging and payment platform handles unanswered voice calls. By leveraging this flaw, researchers created a tool dubbed 'WeWorm,' which demonstrates how AI can automate the exploitation of account security protocols.

The demonstration has highlighted the growing risks associated with AI-driven cyber threats. Because WeChat is a central hub for communication and financial transactions for millions of users, the potential for large-scale account compromise has raised significant alarm. The firm reported the findings to Tencent Holdings, the parent company of WeChat, to address the security gap.
