Volkswagen, currently facing significant financial challenges, has announced a preliminary deal to divest its manufacturing plant in Osnabrück, Germany. The facility, which has historically produced vehicles, is set to be acquired by a partnership involving the state government of Lower Saxony and the Israeli investment firm Aurelius Capital.

According to the agreement, the transition is expected to be completed by mid-2027. Once the handover is finalized, the plant will pivot its operations toward the defense sector. Specifically, the facility is intended to produce hardware for Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, the Israeli firm responsible for the Iron Dome missile defense technology. While the move represents a major shift in the plant's industrial focus, it also highlights the broader economic restructuring occurring within Germany's manufacturing sector as major automotive players look to mitigate ongoing financial pressures.
