According to reports, the facility has been running on emergency diesel generators for over a week. This event represents the 27th time the plant has been forced to switch to emergency power since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. While the plant is currently in a state of cold shutdown to minimize the risk of a catastrophic accident, the repeated loss of external grid connectivity highlights the ongoing instability surrounding the facility. The plant has been under Russian military control since early in the conflict, and both Ukrainian and Russian officials have frequently traded blame for the shelling and infrastructure damage that leads to these power outages.
